If your kids love Julia Donaldson books, and you’r If your kids love Julia Donaldson books, and you’re trying to get out into the great outdoors more this year, we’ve got good news: there’s a new kids’ walking trail launching at @forestryenglanddalby this month. 

Based on the brilliant picture book, Room on the Broom, there’ll be activities along the way and some forest facts, too. We’ve done lots of Dalby’s children’s trails and they’re excellent: easy to follow, plenty to look at along the way and just the right length for little legs. Why not add it to your February half term plans? You’ll find all the details over on our website.

It was a brilliant year, with surprise KitKats, lots of festivals and even a chance encounter with the Gogglebox sisters!

It’s a fun, family-friendly walking trail of the city, taking you to secret places, iconic landmarks and hidden gems. Many of the snickelways have recently been treated  to a refresh thanks to @the_york_bid , so you can even find out about the history behind them. Pick up your free map from the @visityork Information Centre or download it from our website or the @the_york_bid website.

It’s soggy now, so we’re glad we went out for a walk around York first thing to enjoy the dusting of snow while it lasted. It’s on until January 12th and gives you discounts on certain tickets up to almost the end of March. We’re massive fans of leaving the car at home and taking the train whenever possible. After all, who wants to tackle the A64 on a sunny day? Not us, if we can help it.

One of the city’s most loved events (by locals, an One of the city’s most loved events (by locals, anyway!) is York Residents’ Festival, and it’s back on 31 January & 1 February 2026. 

You’ll enjoy free entry to some of York’s best-loved attractions and exclusive offers on food, shopping and experiences across the city. The full list hasn’t been released yet, but a little birdie tells us it will include lots of our family-friendly favourites. 

A warning though! Some experiences will need pre-booking, so you do need to plan ahead and book as soon as you can. 
The full list of offers will be revealed at 12pm on Friday, and we’ll be sharing all the details on our website too to help you plan your weekend.

We enjoyed The Christmas Mousequerade at @fairfax_ We enjoyed The Christmas Mousequerade at @fairfax_house so much we went back at the weekend, so the whole family could see the cutest festive experience in York. And because we had tickets from last year that turn into an 12 month pass, it was free! Highly recommended if you want a simple, sweet activity this Christmas 🎄
As you’ll know by now, we do love a bargain, and n As you’ll know by now, we do love a bargain, and nothing says good value like a ticket that lasts for a whole year. Take a leaf out of our frugal Yorkshire book and visit these places now to enjoy a lovely day out AND 12 months of unlimited visits. Fairfax House, JORVIK Viking Centre, York Minster and York Castle Museum in particular are in their festive element at the moment, so we’d put them top of the list for now. Just try not to lose the ticket, especially if it’s a paper one (speaking from experience, you won’t remember where you put it when the sun’s shining and you’re in the mood for a free day out…).
