With this week’s sad news, we’ve found ourselves r With this week’s sad news, we’ve found ourselves reminiscing about one of our favourite family day trips, inspired by David Hockney, one of the world’s greatest artists and a proud Yorkshireman.

For a brilliantly inspiring family day out, Salts Mill in Saltaire is just the place. It houses the world’s largest permanent collection of Hockney’s work in one incredible old mill building that’s free to enter.

It’s a place we’ve been visiting since we were children ourselves, and we’ve been taking our kids since they were little too. There’s plenty for families: bright galleries, a brilliant bookshop, independent shopping and Salt’s Diner, where you can refuel with coffee, cake or lunch before wandering around again.

If you’ve never been, save this and add it to your Yorkshire bucket list. And if you have, you’ll know why we love it.

It’s that time of year when the less organised amo It’s that time of year when the less organised among us (👋) realise that there’s a long holiday looming and it might be nice to have a family break. If you’re up for staying somewhere lovely that you’ll get a huge dose of nature along with your stay, here’s a recommendation for you.

Whether you’re happiest under canvas or prefer a hot tub and a proper bed, @baxbymanor is brilliant for families. From cosy camping pitches and stylish glamping to a magical treehouse, sauna and hot tubs, it’s the perfect place to slow down, switch off and make the most of summer together. It’s just a short drive from everything that York and the surrounding area has to offer, too. We’ve stayed there ourselves and wholeheartedly recommend it for a relaxing break away from it all 🌿🏕️💦

Black Wheat Club has been on our list since it ope Black Wheat Club has been on our list since it opened, but every time we’ve tried to get a table it’s been full. So when we spotted the new takeaway menu and the sun decided to make an appearance, we didn’t hang about. Freshly made, properly good brunch you can enjoy wherever the day takes you (in our case, the gardens of Merchant Adventurer’s Hall)? We’re in. No booking, no waiting, just excellent food from one of York’s most exciting new additions. A 10/10 recommendation for a lovely summer brunch in York.

This morning we joined the queue to celebrate the This morning we joined the queue to celebrate the start of a new chapter in York’s high street: the opening of Toppings. The largest independent bookshop in the UK, it’s home to thousands of books of all kinds, set across three floors (with lift access, thankfully). There’s something for all ages and interests, all in one glorious space and with some of the best views too. We hope it’s the start of a long and very happy love story with the city.

It’s taken us a little while to get there, but @me It’s taken us a little while to get there, but @meetatmae was well worth the wait. It’s a lovely independent cafe a stone’s throw from the station and the city, serving tasty treats including really good pancakes (some of the best in York, according to our youngest). It’s a hidden gem that we’d recommend seeking out 🥞 ☕️

If you’re heading to the National Railway Museum s If you’re heading to the National Railway Museum soon, there’s one thing you should know before you set off: the walk from the station is a bit longer than it used to be.

The good news? It’s nowhere near as bad as some of the younger members of our family believe! We timed it this week and it took just seven minutes from the station to the entrance, even during the heatwave!

The new route is flat, buggy-friendly and actually pretty lovely, with greenery, seating and a wide cycle path all the way. But if you need to drive rather than walk, there’s a museum car park.

Top tips: build in a few extra minutes, enjoy the change of scene and maybe keep the road train in your back pocket for the journey home 🚂👌

We went along to the preview Chariots, Treasure an We went along to the preview Chariots, Treasure and Power: Secrets of the Melsonby Hoard at @theyorkshiremuseum this morning, and it’s incredible. From cauldrons to coral and burnt chariots - as well as a mysterious 150kg fused mass of iron known as ‘the block’ - it’s exciting enough to make us think about investing in a metal detector!

Discovered in North Yorkshire and never seen in public before, the Melsonby Hoard is already rewriting what we thought we knew about Iron Age Britain, and we can’t wait to hear what the researchers discover as they carry on looking into it.

Opening tomorrow at the Yorkshire Museum and running until summer 2027, it’s one for curious kids, history-loving grown-ups and anyone who loves a good mystery. Don’t forget that tickets are valid for 12 months too, making it great value.

This has to be one of York’s best cafe for familie This has to be one of York’s best cafe for families ✨

We headed to @bluebirdbakeryyorkshire in Acomb this morning for our @indieyork social and it reminded us why so many local families love it here. Great coffee, excellent pastries, loads of space, a relaxed atmosphere and genuinely family-friendly vibes while also being a cool hang-out for adults.

It’s the kind of place where parents can actually enjoy their coffee while little ones tuck into a croissant, and there’s always a lovely buzz about the place.

If you haven’t been yet, add it to your York cafe list.

The return of York’s big wheel triggered flashback The return of York’s big wheel triggered flashbacks of that time we decided to finally go for a ride on it with one of our kids who turned out to really, really not like heights. And wanted to get off while it was turning 😬

Anyway, it got us thinking about all the mistakes we’ve made along the way, despite knowing the city inside out. Here are just a few of our fails, which we hope might help you avoid doing the same 🤞
