York can feel full-on when it’s busy, especially with kids in tow, but there are plenty of peaceful corners where you can slow down, escape the crowds and enjoy a bit of a breather.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourite calm spaces in and around the city centre, from hidden gardens to secret spaces that are usually empty even when the city’s buzzing.

Save this for your next busy day in York, and send it to someone who you think would like to have these ideas up their sleeve.

Right behind @exploreyorklibraryandarchive, this pretty space is right in the heart of York but always quiet.

This little play area is really underused, but the families who know about it love it. It’s around the corner from Micklegate and Bishy Road, with their cafes and shops.

Kids love balancing on the stones, and there’s a great selection of cafes if you fancy a coffee or cake.

Dean’s Park is the garden to @yorkminsterofficial and is a lovely place to spend time.

This pretty garden is the perfect place for 5 minutes’ peace while your kids inspect the flowers.

A gorgeous garden that’s free to enter. Keep an eye out for the York Minster cat while you’re there.

Even when it’s busy by the Museum Street entrance, the area by the large ruins tends to be quiet.

We can never understand why this area is always so quiet - it’s really peaceful and there’s plenty to look at.

Wizards and witches, assemble! The most magical afternoon tea in York has returned to @thegrandyork and it’s spellbinding. There’s plenty for kids to enjoy, from mixing and tasting potions to tucking into themed cakes, but it’s a real treat for adults too. The food is delicious, the service is super friendly and it’s a beautiful place to spend some together. Oh, and the scones are top notch, which is very important!

It’s running all summer and we’d wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone in the mood for a memorable, magical experience in York.

If this doesn’t convince you to swerve the chain coffee shops and head to an independent instead, nothing will! How many people can say they’ve had a drink or something to eat within one of York’s historic bars? This is @gatehousecoffee on Walmgate, where the views are incredible, the coffee’s great and it’s a really memorable place to go with kids. Not one to attempt with a buggy or limited mobility due to the steps, sadly, but if you can make it in, you won’t regret it. Lovely.

If you missed Live at the Museum Gardens last weekend, here’s why it should be on your list for next summer. We’re a bit late to the party, but now we’ve been we will definitely be going again.

Self Esteem was incredible, and it was so lovely to see older kids and teens enjoying it too. Definitely not one for children, Sunday’s Comedy Festival was a cracking adult night out. The atmosphere for both events was fantastic, the setting’s unlike anywhere else, and there’s something really special about spending a summer evening in one of York’s most beautiful places. We had both the standard and premium experiences and both were excellent. It’s in our 2027 diary, and we’d really recommend it for you, too.

🚫 Not Gatekeeping: York’s hidden beach!

We know, we know - this is one of many places that people don’t want us to share, but that doesn’t seem fair, so here it is: a little sandy cove where the River Nidd meets the River Ouse, tucked away along the free Beningbrough riverside walk.

It’s a place to look and explore rather than paddle, as river currents make getting in a definite no-go, even when the water looks calm. Instead, dig in the sand, enjoy a picnic and keep an eye out for York’s very own tansy beetles!

The full circular walk is around 3 miles, so it’s best suited to bigger children, though you can easily walk just part of the route with little ones (although it’s not one to attempt with a standard buggy).

It’s a gorgeous place, and one we’re happy to share. Just look after it if you visit 🌸💚

⚠️ Please don’t swim or paddle. River currents aren’t always visible from the bank.
