AD | A new dance class for York’s smallest movers 🩰

babyballet® has arrived in York and Selby, with fun, informal ballet, tap and movement classes for children aged 6 months to 6 years.

Led by trained dancer and former primary school teacher Miss Jasmin, the classes use music, storytelling and props to help little ones build confidence, coordination and a love of movement.

Classes take place at:

📍 Staynor Hall Community Centre, Selby
📍 Easingwold Scout Centre
📍 Wigginton Recreation Hall

There’s a choice of weekday and weekend sessions, with different classes for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and children starting school. New families can also book a three-week trial before committing, and you can save 20% with our Little Vikings Family Card discount!

Museum Street is having a proper glow-up ✨ Alongside some York favourites, there’s been a sprinkle of new openings, making it an even better destination for families.

Grab a colourful drink, strong coffee (for the parents) or açai bowl at @risebrunch, lose an hour in the gorgeous children’s section at @toppingsyork or join the queue for pancake stacks at @brewandbrownie. For something more low key, head to @ciaoyork in the Museum Gardens for refreshments in the great outdoors, or escape the bustle in the children’s section of @exploreyorklibraryandarchive. Even more reasons to head into York as the summer comes to an end 📚☕️🐿️

A simple end-of-summer activity in York for just £1 🦆☀️

It’s always at this point in the holidays that we start keeping things really local and low-key, usually with numerous trips to @friendsrowntreepark which we’re lucky to have on the doorstep. And what makes a trip to the park really good? Feeding the ducks, of course!

Pick up a £1 bag of duck food from Rowntree Park Reading Café, then head to the lake to feed the ducks, geese and swans. It’s hard to think of a better way to spend a pound or two. In fact, we ended up buying four bags today!

Our youngest said ‘I love doing this, it makes me feel good’ which sums it up perfectly. It’s a timely reminder that the best things are often the slowest and simplest. If you’ve got some time to fill, you can easily make a morning or afternoon of it too. Here’s to park life 🌳 🦆 🥎

👻 Ghosts After Dark is returning to York, and it’s going to be bigger than ever!

From 4th to 8th November 2026, all 70 Ghosts in the Gardens sculptures will gather in and around York Museum Gardens for five atmospheric evenings of after-dark adventure.

Expect live storytelling, atmospheric lighting, fog, a new interactive experience, plenty of surprises and the event’s first night market. The route is expanding too, taking in King’s Manor courtyard, Library Lawn and more historic spaces nearby.

We went last year and absolutely loved it - it’s a really unique York event and we can’t recommend it highly enough.

This was a lovely trip out: a walk around gorgeous Skipwith Common and lunch at The Drovers Arms. The Common is beautiful, and the perfect easy escape to the countryside with kids.

We’re generally all in favour of a picnic to keep costs down, but it was nice to try out @droversarmsskipwith, which we’d heard lots of good things about. It has a good kids’ menu (toad in the hole, mac and cheese etc) and lots of tempting adult options. A lovely walk and a proper pub lunch - one to save for autumn or try before the end of the summer ☀️ 🍂

One of the best things about living in York is how

One of the best things about living in York is how many days out are just a train ride away. From ice cream in Malton to sandcastles in Scarborough, free museums in Leeds to castle views in Edinburgh, we’ve got some amazing places within easy reach, and there’s plenty to do when you arrive.

We’ve done all of these train trips with our kids, and love the freedom of leaving the car at home and letting someone else do the driving. Start with small journeys when they’re small and before you know it, you’ll be heading to London for the day with your teens, looking out of the window and wondering where the time went 🥹

August is a funny mix of making the most of summer and getting ready for September, isn’t it?

These are the things we try to do before the kids go back to make sure we’re not panic buying school shoes on the last day of the holidays (been there) or finding that the club they really want to try is fully booked because we left it too late 🤦‍♀️. With a few weeks left, we’ll still be trying to fit in some fun stuff without spending a fortune too. If there’s something you always do in August, let us know!

It’s been on our list for a while, but we’ve finally visited The Secret Forest at Hazlewood Castle and it’s a lovely place to spend time with your kids.

Hidden away among the trees, there’s plenty to keep children busy without it feeling hectic or overwhelming. As a forest trail, it’s a totally outdoor affair, which we enjoyed but you’d want to bear in mind on a rainy day (remember them?!). Along the way, you can:

This is a lovely festival with lots of activities for families.

Support York’s four legged friends by heading down to the RSPCA Summer Fair.

We love Eden Camp, and it’s cheaper to visit this summer too.

Yum! Enjoy some of the best fish and chips in York in one of the most beautiful places in York.

No trip to York is complete if you don’t meet a Viking!
