It’s so lovely to see York start to come alive a It’s so lovely to see York start to come alive again, from the tables and chairs appearing outside the cafes (here’s how pretty @partisanyork looked this morning) to the independent shops doing a roaring trade. Many of York’s attractions have been in touch to share their re-opening plans with us this week, and there’s a sense of optimism in the air (we’re ignoring the April chill).
We had our first trip to @castle_howard for months We had our first trip to @castle_howard for months and it was lovely: a walk through the woods, some tree-climbing, a lot of playing at Skelf Island and a game of hide-and-seek at one of the best spots in Yorkshire (those hedges in the picture are perfect for disappearing behind). It’s been a long time coming but was well worth the wait.
Happy weekend! It might be chilly but there’s th Happy weekend! It might be chilly but there’s the promise of some sunshine in York over the next couple of days. If you’re stuck for things to do, hop over to our website for ideas for family walks and the last of the Easter activities. And don’t forget that the Little Vikings I Spy Trail is available all year round and is a fun way to explore York with kids - link in bio. Just wrap up warm and don’t forget the snacks!
After a week (or, let’s be honest, month) of liv After a week (or, let’s be honest, month) of living almost entirely on Easter eggs, this delivery from @thehappygherkin was more than welcome. We’d heard good things about it from friends, and it certainly lived up to our expectations - fresh, tasty and very healthy. We couldn’t quite persuade the kids to try the gherkin soup, but they happily filled up on the pierogi.

York’s come a very long way on the veggie food front - when I was growing up, the best we could hope for the was the Pizza Hut salad bar! Vegan? Forget it.

If you fancy some plant-based goodness from a local business, give it a go (and we won’t judge if you follow it with a chunk of chocolate egg or two...). Many thanks to @thehappygherkin for our meal (complimentary PR product)
Think York’s all about heritage? Think again. Al Think York’s all about heritage? Think again. Although it’s a city that proudly embraces its colourful history, it can’t be accused of being stuck in the past. This amazing new street art is a case in point: it’s a city-wide celebration of the incredible local heroes - cleaners, postal workers, police officers, NHS workers - who were on the pandemic frontline, working hard so that the rest of us could stay safely at home. The Guardians of York exhibition is a collaboration between @aopprojects, @thepostman_art and @theyorkbid, and it will be in full swing from Friday 9th April (although we got a sneaky look at a couple today). Find all the details on our website, including an interactive map (link in bio).
Arctic temperatures aside, we won the weather lott Arctic temperatures aside, we won the weather lottery today for our trip to @ntbeningbrough (it’s always a risk with pre-booked tickets, but we’ve learnt not to trust the long-range forecast and just hope for the best).

Beningbrough is one of our favourite places - just the right size for little legs, but plenty to explore if you want to go off the beaten track and go for a longer walk. Our kids are creatures of habit, so they gravitated towards the same trees to climb, swings to swing on and corners of the gardens to inspect as they always do. We did a few of the Easter activities too, like testing our hopping skills on the lawn. It’s fair to say that the Easter Bunny has nothing to worry about! All in all, an egg-cellent day out in the Yorkshire sunshine.
It was so lovely to be able to take our youngest t It was so lovely to be able to take our youngest to Rowntree Park to play with her best friend this weekend, and to see so many families enjoying the space and the sunshine.

We’re really lucky to have Rowntree Park on our doorstep, and it’s alway there for us if we need to escape the house for fresh air, somewhere to play or just a walk to see the ducks or spot the squirrels. If the kids want to skate in the skatepark, play a game of tennis, hunt for frogs or test out their new basketball on a proper court, we can do that too. It’s a really special place to so many people and that’s why I’m so delighted to have just been appointed a trustee of @friendsrowntreepark, helping preserve and protect the park, now and for generations to come. It’s an exciting time for the park, and I can’t wait to get started. Happy Easter to you all!
Picnics are officially back on! When it comes to e Picnics are officially back on! When it comes to eating out with kids, there’s a lot to be said for swerving the potential stresses of a restaurant and packing a picnic or buying something to eat outdoors instead. We’ve put together a selection of lovely independent places around York where you can pick up tasty and interesting picnic food, from meats and cheeses to scones and brownies (link in bio - and we’re updating the list all the time so keep an eye on it). We’ve thrown in some of our top picks for street food and great coffee, too, so you’ll never be short of somewhere to eat when you’re in the city. Just find your nearest green space and tuck in.
Those blue skies! We do the walk around York’s c Those blue skies! We do the walk around York’s city walls a lot, but it never gets boring because no two days are the same. Today was a scorcher!

Now that the restrictions have been lifted a little, there are more opportunities for a family walk. Our guide to the best walks in and around York is one of the most popular on our website - find the link in our bio and discover city walks, woodland walks, forest trails and much more, all tried and tested by us and our three little helpers. Just don’t forget the snacks (or the suncream)
