Did anyone else need a walk after the news that th Did anyone else need a walk after the news that the schools aren’t going back until at least March?! Not a massive surprise, but even our kids were disappointed to know that they’ll have to wait a few more weeks to see their friends. On the upside, it was great to be back on York’s city walls now that the ice has gone, there was a hint of spring in the air and lots of our older relatives are having their vaccinations this week, so we’ll keep looking on the bright side. If you’re using your daily walk to keep things in perspective, you’ll find lots of options on our website - plan a family walk for later in the year or find a local gem of a route near you
Wishing you all a brrrrrrilliant week (well, as br Wishing you all a brrrrrrilliant week (well, as brilliant as it can be under the circumstances). At least the sun’s shining, even if it’s freezing - it’s all about the little wins and simple pleasures at the moment
For us, this lockdown has been about trying to fin For us, this lockdown has been about trying to find little moments of comfort and joy to balance out the discomfort and frustration of doing the homeschooling/work/everything else juggle without much to look forward to. Our daily walk plays a big part in making us feel better, as do endless cups of @yorkshiretea and supportive chats with friends on WhatsApp.

Really good TV shows and a takeaway are our biggest treat, and last night was the ultimate: the final two episodes of the amazing Schitt’s Creek and some delicious katsu, gyoza and ramen from @yuzu_streetfood. After a week of mostly eating the kids’ leftovers and not having time to sit down for a proper meal, it was just what we needed. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fill the massive gap left by the Roses, please shout. They’ve brought us a lot of happiness during the madness.

Next week we’ll be spreading joy ourselves, revealing the winners of this year’s Little Vikings awards, so watch this space!
When the kids asked if we could go to @friendsrown When the kids asked if we could go to @friendsrowntreepark today, they hadn’t quite factored in the flooding over the past week. So, although a whizz along the zip wire was out, we still went along to say hello to the ducks. It was a nice surprise to find @rpreadingcafe open for takeaway, so we picked up some drinks too. Can’t wait until we can sit in the cafe again and eat lunch while the children browse the books. One day, one day.
Water, water, everywhere. Very wet scenes out ther Water, water, everywhere. Very wet scenes out there in York today, which looks pretty but it’s not great. Apparently it’s peaked, though, so fingers crossed it’ll start to go down soon. The sun popped out to say hello today, and for a few minutes it really felt like spring which was lovely. It’ll be here soon enough, and in the meantime I’m ignoring our kids’ requests to buy a boat...
Nothing beats the warm glow of a bakery, and nothi Nothing beats the warm glow of a bakery, and nothing beats the warm glow of supporting a local business. After a morning of non-stop timestables/phonics/Zoom classes, I took our three very restless kids out for a good walk into York. It just so happened that our route took us via the wonderful @bluebirdbakeryyorkshire, so we stocked up on bread and teacakes and I explained to them (again) why we try to support small businesses as much as we can.

As a member of the @indieyork Steering Committee, this week I’ve heard first hand accounts of how hard many of York’s businesses are being hit by this lockdown. Please do support them however you can - every order really does count. Many places like the Bluebird Bakery are able to deliver, so you can enjoy their goodies from home if you can’t get to them. Even better.
Rain, rain, go away! York could definitely do with Rain, rain, go away! York could definitely do without this level of water and we homeschooling parents could definitely do without another obstacle to getting our stir-crazy kids outside for some much-needed exercise. We hope that week three of lockdown is going okay for you all so far, whatever the weather

The perfect place for tired local parents in need of a break, kids in need of a runaround and anyone wanting to build a snowman (for today at least)
